The region surrounding Kas is rich in history
while the dramatic geography will delight the outdoor enthusiast. A few
highlights include:
Boat trips
The single best day trip by boat is probably
from Kas to Simena Island, taking in the ancient sunken city of Kekova.
These ruins, with staircases, kilns and a quayside are easily visible
beneath the crystal clear water, while snorkelling or SCUBA gear will
only add to the experience.
Ancient Olympos
Midway between Antalya and Kas, is the
ancient site of Olympos and the
Chimera (“The Chimera, a cluster of spontaneous
flames that blaze from crevices on the rocky
slopes of Mount Oympos is the
stuff of legend” Lonely Planet
guide to Turkey). Near the ruined
city there's four kilometre beach
and the Olympos lodge makes an
ideal stopover if you want to take the Antalya – Kas trip at
a leisurely pace.
Saklikent Gorge
The natural wonder of Saklikent (“Hidden
City”), an 18 kilometre
gorge cut into the Akdaglar mountains, makes
an ideal spot to escape the summer heat
and experience the region's natural beauty. The gorge
is 60 kilometres to the west of Kas. Between
Kas and Saklikent, an abundance of fragrant
evergreen valleys and secluded villages provide endless scope
for exploration.
