The abundant sunshine ensures that regional fruit is bursting with flavour
and fresh orange juice is cheap and plentiful. For something stronger,
try some of the reasonably priced and very drinkable Turkish wines, such
as Cankaya, Kavak and Doluca; or sample the local aniseed-flavoured spirit,
Raki, which is similar to Greek Ouzo and is served with water. The Turkish
brewed Efes (“Ephesus”) beer is widely available and is perfect
as the temperature rises.
Recommended bars include:
- Denizalti (“submarine”) on the town square; enjoy
watching life go by from the
upper terrace with its traditional
cushions for seating. They make a mean martini here
and play a range of good music including jazz.
- Zeytin further
to the east and overlooking
the harbour side is the ideal
location to relax and watch the
gulets drift in and out. The
bar has an extensive list of
familiar and novel cocktails
to sample.
